Sea & Sky & Soil: The Kona Coffee Way

Our Kona Coffee Farm on the Big Island in Hawaii

We’ve spoken about what defines Kona coffee: the type of coffee, where it’s grown, Kona’s roots and role in Hawai‘i’s history from the early 19th century to now. But what is it that makes Kona coffee so special? What can Kona coffee make us feel upon each sip?

Kona coffee is more than just a name or a type; Kona coffee means Hawaiian coffee, in form and spirit. In the fruit and seeds of Kona coffee, we are mindful of the rich volcanic soil of the Big Island, our deep, red-hot roots beneath the earth. In Kona, we taste the sky that brings cooling rain, and the warm sun that dapples the coffee farms in the shade of ancient ‘Ōhi‘a forest. And when we brew Kona, we hear the depths of the seas that gird our islands, feel the salt spray and the mystic fog that settles over our lush valleys and winding hills.

Hawai‘i isn't just an island chain, but also a lifestyle, a state of mind. The slow rhythms of the ocean and the earth create the mana, or power of Hawai‘i. A Hawai‘i lifestyle stems from this natural connection; Hawaiians are mindful of their roots in the earth and the sea, and rejoice in that connectedness.

Even the native Hawaiian division of the island into smaller properties flowed from this connection. The ahupua‘a was a wedge-shaped territory that would follow the natural watercourses from the mountains to the sea, and would hold all of the natural resources a community would need to be self-sustaining.

This mindfulness of our beautiful and bountiful surroundings, our appreciation for nature and community, is still fundamental to the Hawaiian spirit, and the Kona way.

In our Kona coffee, we experience the best of Hawai‘i, and become mindful of its past, present, and future. When you drink our Kona coffee, let the notes of cherry and dark chocolate, lilikoi fruit and raw honey, conjure for you our island state’s majestic mountains and wondrous calderas, the crash of the surf on our sand, and the promise of our open skies.

Practice mindfulness as you sip our 100% Kona coffee, and bring the Hawai‘i lifestyle with you as you take your next steps. Let our Kona coffee infuse aloha into your daily life, no matter how far from our shores you may wander.
